Staying on task can be challenging, especially for individuals with ADHD. We understand first-hand how tricky it can be to be productive, but we have found some hacks that make it a bit easier.
- Time Blocking: Block off certain times of your day to do specific tasks. This will help you meet deadlines and visualize what your day looks like.
- Set Visual Timers: Using a visual timer can help you see how much time you have left to complete certain tasks. It also helps avoid getting caught up in one thing and forgetting to tackle other items on your to-do list.
- Start with Easy Wins: Start with the things that you know will be easy to complete for a quick burst of accomplishment, which helps motivate you to complete more challenging tasks.
- Make Tasks Bite-Sized: Break down larger tasks into smaller and more manageable tasks to reduce stress and overwhelm.
- Stick to a Routine: Following a regular routine helps productivity and establishes positive habits to approach tasks.
- Declutter Your Space: The more organized your space, the more effective you will be. Maintain a clean work area so you aren’t distracted or overwhelmed.
- Wear Noise-Canceling Headphones: Noise-canceling headphones help you stay focused by blocking out unwanted sounds and minimizing distractions.
- Use Website Blockers: Website blockers help you stay on task and not be distracted by other sites.
- Create a Dedicated Workspace: Whether it’s a home office, a desk in a quiet corner, or your favourite coffee shop, a dedicated workspace encourages productivity.
- Batch Similar Tasks: Batch similar tasks together. For example, answer all emails at once or make all your phone calls at the same time.
- Use ADHD-Friendly Apps: Apps such as goblin.tools, Todoist, Forest or Focusmate are excellent tools to help stay on track.
- Try the Pomodoro Technique: This time management method implements 25 minutes of focused work, followed by a five-minute break in between.
- Set Up Visual Reminders: Keep tasks top of mind by using Sticky notes, whiteboards or digital alerts.
- Automate Repetitive Tasks: Use calendar scheduling tools, and task automation apps like Zapier to handle routine processes.
- Use a Planner: Whether digital or physical (or both), a planner helps you organize aspects of your life such as appointments and deadlines.
- Reward Yourself: Set up small rewards for completing tasks. Whether it’s a coffee break, a short walk, or watching an episode of your favorite show.
- Make It Fun: Turning boring tasks into a fun game or listening to your favourite songs while working can help fuel your motivation.
- Embrace Deadlines: Deadlines create a sense of urgency so set and follow the deadlines either set by you or by others.
- Seek Accountability: Check in with others to help keep you on track! Additionally, they can help provide encouragement and feedback, which can maintain motivation.
- Prioritize Self-Care: Remember to prioritize sleep, eat and hydrate and take breaks as needed! By taking care of yourself, you will be better equipped to do what needs to be done effectively.
