Neurodiversity and Collaboration

7

As awareness of neurodiversity grows, more organizations are realizing the value of embracing different ways of thinking, processing, and communicating. But how do we collaborate effectively when brains work differently? In today’s blog, we want to offer some practical tips to help foster effective and inclusive collaboration with neurodiverse individuals.

Encourage Clear Communication

Understanding different types of communication styles and what works based on the individual is key to a successful business, regardless of the person. However, for those with ADHD, implementing ways that encourage successful communication have an even larger impact. Clear communication can help everyone gain a greater understanding regarding different working styles, which can result in better teamwork, productivity, and collaboration.

Encourage your workplace to embrace the unique skills and talents of every employee and actively find ways to bring out the best in every team member.

Tips for success:

  • Provide written summaries after meetings.
  • Use visual aids.
  • Avoid sarcasm, or vague directions.
  • Don’t expect instant feedback, give people time to process and respond. Provide alternate ways for people to express their thoughts and opinions.

Recognize Strengths

It is important to understand and recognize the unique talents neurodivergent team members possess, and where to harness those skills effectively. Give tasks and projects that complement their strengths and interests. By doing this, you will foster success and allow neurodivergent individuals to do their best work, which will encourage job satisfaction. Be sure to provide clear instructions, and expectations when work is assigned to ensure everyone understands their role and responsibilities.

Tips for success:

  • Let people choose roles based on their strengths and comfortability.
  • Acknowledge that not everyone will interact in the same ways, so be flexible and understanding in different ways and with different methods.

Respect Sensory Needs

Group settings can be overwhelming, especially for people with sensory sensitivities or social anxiety. Therefore, it’s important to provide an environment where neurodiverse individuals can succeed. Depending on the person, accommodations will vary, so ensure you cater to their unique needs.

Tips for success:

  • Keep collaboration spaces quiet and calm when possible.
  • Offer remote or hybrid options for participation.
  • Be mindful of lighting, noise, and distractions.

Provide Support

To truly build a collaborative and inclusive workplace, it is important to offer resources, education, and training to employees. This will further promote understanding, respect, and support. You may also want to seek out mentors or one-on-one support for workers who may require help in navigating certain situations, offer clarification, and help encourage professional growth.

Tips for success:

  • Normalize conversations about neurodiversity.
  • Always ask, never assume.
  • Celebrate diversity as a strength.
