Using Affirmations to Ease Anxiety

7

There are many different anxiety disorders, and a variety of treatment options available to help manage your symptoms. One helpful tool you can consider is incorporating affirmations into your daily routine. These words of encouragement can have a positive impact on your anxiety and may bring you calm and reassurance. In today’s blog, let’s discuss more about the role they play to help mitigate stress and anxiety, offer some examples, and show how to create your own affirmations.

What Are Affirmations?

Affirmations are described as “positive, self-help statements that may help change an individual’s mindset and encourage positive behavior.” While they aren’t a cure for anxiety, they can be beneficial when practiced consistently and used in situations that stir up negative emotions. Affirmations can be said in the morning and evening to bookend your day. When incorporated into meditation or other breathing exercises, affirmations can be even more beneficial to your mental health.

Research shows that positive self-talk and optimistic thinking significantly influence your emotional state. When you substitute anxious thoughts with uplifting images or affirmations, you will find your anxiety lessen and feel less worried.

How to Create an Affirmation

There are many different affirmations that you can use to help encourage and reframe your thoughts. You can even create your own, based on your unique situation and needs.

An article from PsychCentral offers some helpful ways to create your own affirmations:

  • Use words and phrases that relate to your feelings or situation.
  • Incorporate words that feel natural and realistic so that you believe and trust what you’re saying.
  • Use first person perspective that begin with “I” or “my.”
  • Write affirmations in the present tense.

Some examples of affirmations include:

  • I am safe and not threatened.
  • I am in no physical danger.
  • I am confident and relaxed.
  • I feel comfortable in crowds.
  • There is no obstacle that I cannot overcome.
  • I am carefree.
  • I stay calm in new situations.
  • I feel in control.
  • I am strong and brave.

How to Use Affirmations

There are many ways to incorporate affirmations into your daily routine. Some ways to do so include:

  • Write them down while focusing on their meaning and believing the words.
  • Record them on your phone and replay them several times during the day, or when you need them.
  • Jot them down and place around your home or office. On your bathroom mirror is a great place so you can repeat them to yourself as you brush your teeth in the morning, for example.
  • Use a specific affirmation when you need to calm down or reset. Choose one that is easy to remember and comforts you in high anxiety moments.

Find what works best for you and be consistent in using your affirmations. The more often you practice, the more natural it will become to call on them when you need them most.

While affirmations aren’t a cure for anxiety, they can be an incredibly useful technique in managing your emotions. By repeating positive statements, you can help reframe your mindset and reduce negative thoughts that contribute to anxiety. This practice encourages self-compassion and can create a more supportive inner dialogue. Remember, it’s not about ignoring your feelings but rather acknowledging them and replacing self-doubt with positive thinking.
