The Benefits of Daily Laughs

7

Laughter is said to be the best medicine. There is no doubt that when you spend time laughing, whether solo or in the company of others, you feel relaxed, content and fulfilled. There are not only mental benefits to laughter, but also physical ones. So, today, let’s discuss several of its benefits and practical ways you can incorporate more into your life, helping improve your overall well being.

Physical Benefits of Laughter

When you laugh, there are many emotions you experience. Some of these are easy to describe and feel, while others are occurring without you even realizing.

Here are some ways laughter can improve your physical health

  • Increases immunity: sharing a laugh, even briefly can help boost your immunity by reducing your cortisol levels and increasing immune cells and infection fighting antibodies.
  • Enhances heart health: like light physical activity, laughter can help improve circulation in your body, reducing the risk of heart conditions.
  • Helps with pain and tension: releasing endorphins, which occurs while laughing, can relax your body and help remove the perception of pain.

The Impact of Laughter

Reduces anxiety and stress

Think about the last time you had a real, genuine belly laugh. You likely felt your body relax and your mind at ease. This is because it reduces your stress hormones and increases feel good hormones like dopamine and serotonin. This shift can offer a distraction for your brain, which can help reduce the mental toll of stress, anxiety, worry and overwhelm.

Strengthens social connections

When you spend time with people you value and care about, sharing stories, common interests, and a similar sense of humour, you strengthen your connections. Laughing together can further build relationships as it encourages openness and vulnerability. The inside jokes, silly memories, or experiences you share with others create deep connections that fuel our mind and bodies.

Improves resilience

Laughter fosters confidence and resilience. By finding humour in various situations, we can shift our perspective, enabling us to handle them more effectively. Laughter also enhances our mindset, contributing to a positive outlook. This optimistic approach is better suited for problem-solving, tackling challenges, and resolving conflicts

Ways to Laugh More

There’s no such thing as too much laughter. However, it can be challenging at times to find it throughout the turmoil of day-to-day life.

Here are some simple ways to incorporate more giggles to your life:

  • Watch a funny show or video: carve out time to decompress by watching your favourite sitcom or silly (but equally adorable) dog, cat, or baby video. It’s impossible not to laugh when you hear a baby doing so.
  • Listen to an entertaining podcast: these are great as they can be listened to while commuting, working, or on your lunch break.
  • Connect with someone funny: we all have that one person in our life that we can count on to make us laugh!
  • Read a funny book: whether light-hearted fiction, or an entertaining memoir from a favourite comedian, diving into a book that makes you laugh can be extremely therapeutic.

Laughter is a fantastic yet simple way to enhance your mental and physical well-being. By dedicating just a bit of time and effort, you can bring more joy into your life, improving both your emotional and physical health. So, go forth, and be sure to laugh today!
