It seems that September has snuck up on us. As quickly as summer greeted us, it left us just as swiftly! While we are still experiencing lovely weather (thank you very much!), we know that September usually brings cooler temperatures and a different energy. Although it isn’t a new year, welcoming a fresh season can help serve as a reset.
As we get back into the swing of things after a more relaxed summer, you might be craving more structure, purpose and motivation. So, today, let’s chat about some ways you can reset your mental health this September.
Don’t Overschedule
A new month can bring on a variety of different emotions, and this might be the result of your brain working in overdrive. In some cases, it can feel like we are constantly being pulled in a variety of different directions. Therefore, it might be a good idea to consider your schedule and set healthy boundaries to help ensure you don’t overwhelm your to-do list. Remember, it’s also okay to say no to things that drain your energy (both physically and emotionally).
Enjoy the little things
During the summer months it can feel like you are trying to keep up with others. Whether that be social outings, vacations, or constant activities to fill your days, heading into this new month is a great opportunity to celebrate the small things in life. Notice the small, everyday moments that may seem ordinary but bring you joy. This might be enjoying a fancy coffee you make at home, a walk in the sunshine and falling leaves or snuggling into your favourite spot at home with a book you’ve been waiting to devour. Whatever these moments, pause and truly appreciate them.
Additionally, if there is something you have been holding onto, whether it be a habit you are trying to break, a relationship that drains your energy, or internal pressure you put on yourself, make September the month you prioritize letting these things go. Focus your energy on people and activities that fill your cup, rather than empty it.
Create a routine
You might have fallen out of your regular routine during the summer. The good news is creating a gentle routine to slowly ease into is quite simple and your mind and body will thank you.
Consider the following:
- A bedtime you can stick to
- A realistic wake-up time
- Incorporating physical movement into your day
- Setting healthy boundaries
- Turning off your phone an hour or two before bedtime
These small, but impactful, routines can make a significant difference in how you feel.
Check in with yourself
Don’t forget to check in with yourself and consider how you are feeling.
Regularly ask yourself the following:
- How am I feeling right now?
- What does my body need right now?
- What self-care can I do?
- Is there anything I need to forgive myself for?
- What am I grateful for?
- What needs aren’t being met?
- What accomplishments can I celebrate?
- How can I be kinder to myself?
- What can I let go of?
- What brings me joy, and how can I incorporate it into my life?
A new season doesn’t call for a complete overhaul; just a chance to reset and recharge. Take advantage of September by prioritizing your mental health, checking in with your feelings, and celebrating the little things that bring you joy.
