Colouring for your Mental Health

7

Do you remember when you were a kid and how much you loved colouring? Or have you had the opportunity to sit and watch a young child absorbed in their masterpiece, calm and relaxed? It’s no surprise that these feelings translate into adulthood; and it can benefit your mental health as well. So, today, let’s chat about the benefits of colouring as a grown-up.

Benefits of Colouring

In an article from Healthline, they outline the following benefits to indulging in a creative activity:

  • Reduces depression and anxiety
  • Boosts your ability to meditate
  • Serves as a distraction
  • Improve sleep
  • Increase motor skills

Here are some reasons why you might want to consider picking up your very own adult colouring book:

Reset your brain

Colouring can help shift focus away from the stress of everyday life, offering a great distraction. Since the lines are already drawn, you’re free to simply fill them in without pressure or expectations. The repetitive motion and focus on shapes and colours can help quiet your racing thoughts and bring you back to the present moment.

Improve mindfulness

For those who struggle with mindfulness or meditation, colouring offers a simple place to start. There’s something soothing about putting pencil to paper and watching a black-and-white page come to life, especially when the rest of your day feels stressful. It’s also an excellent way to take a break from technology, allowing you to disconnect from distractions.

It’s especially helpful for those managing anxiety, ADHD, or sensory overload, as it allows your body and mind something simple to do.

There’s a book for everyone

There are a variety of colouring books to choose from, catering to every taste and personality. Depending on your preference, you can choose from pages filled with inspirational quotes, detailed nature scenes, cute and cozy designs, or even hilarious swear words for when you just need to laugh and decompress.

You don’t need anything fancy, either. You can download free printable pages online or use a colouring app. Whether you prefer pencils, markers, or digital brushes, it’s important to find what works best for you and inspires creativity. If you do choose to use an app, we suggest turning off your notifications so you can focus on the task at hand.

Keep it fun

One of the best things about colouring is that it doesn’t demand a significant commitment, and it’s an inexpensive hobby! You can colour for five minutes during a lunch break or use it to wind down before bed. Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in a page for as long as you like.

There’s also no pressure to finish a page in one sitting. Leave your book open on your desk and return to it when you need a moment of calm.

Colouring may seem simple, but it’s a wonderful way to relax! So, grab your choice of marker or crayon, pick a page, and enjoy some creative down time. And if you colour outside the lines? That’s just a way to express your individuality.
